I’ll admit– growing up I did not like cream cheese frosting. Every year on her birthday, my middle sister requested a Red Velvet Cake for her birthday. And, every year, I ate none of her cake.
I probably would have stayed away from it forever, really. Until we discovered that Raileigh really, really liked Red Velvet. Anytime we’re out and she sees something flavored Red Velvet, she insists on ordering it. And– you cannot really have Red Velvet without the trademark Cream Cheese Frosting.
So, I gave it a try.
Apparently, your taste buds do change over the years because I was pleasantly surprised to find that not only do I enjoy the Cream Cheese Frosting, I truly love it.
Since I think everything tastes better when it’s made from scratch, I developed a simple recipe to make up a batch of Cream Cheese Frosting. With only 4 ingredients, you can make it in a matter of minutes.
This frosting tastes good on Red Velvet cakes or cupcakes, as well as a multitude of other desserts. Give it a try– I think you’re going to love it!
Cream Cheese Frosting
- 6 tbsp. butter at room temperature
- 8 oz. cream cheese at room temperature
- 4 cups of powdered sugar
- 2 tbsp. heavy whipping cream
Start by combining your butter and cream cheese. I did this with the paddle attachment on my stand mixer. Make sure the two are completely combined.
Add in the powdered sugar. Mix this in slowly so you don’t send a white cloud flying all over your kitchen. After it’s been well-incorporated with the butter and cream cheese, add in the heavy whipping cream. Mix well, scraping the sides of your bowl as you go. Mix until the frosting reaches a light and fluffy consistency.
There you have it– a delicious batch of Cream Cheese Frosting.
