10 reasons to book a winter beach vacation at Sandestin

I love the beach in winter.  As in, this is my absolute favorite time of year to take in the sunshine and miles upon miles of white sand.

So, last month we packed up the family and headed down to the Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort to celebrate our NINTH wedding anniversary.  It’s pretty incredible to think that nine years have already passed.  I have spent over half my life with Darren, and I cherish the moments that we have to celebrate our love and our life together.

Sandestin was the perfect destination to celebrate such an occasion.  This 2400 acre paradise has so much to offer.  From the bay to the beach, the golf courses to the nature trails, there is truly something for everyone.

Now, you may be thinking Why would I want to book a beach vacation in the winter?

There’s many reasons, really.  Today, I am going to share with you the ten best reasons to book a winter beach vacation at Sandestin.

10 Reasons to Take A Winter Beach Vacation

1.  The crowds are virtually non-existent.

If you absolutely detest crowds like I do, then winter is definitely the time you need to head to the beach.  We never once rode the elevator with anyone, the beach was virtually deserted, and we got a parking spot close to the door every single day.  It almost felt as if we had the place to ourselves.

2.  The rates are a fraction of what you’ll find in summer.

When it comes to vacation spending, I like to maximize my money, as I’m sure you do!  The best way to do that is visit the beach during the off-season, when rates are a fraction what you’ll spend during the peak season.  That means you can stay longer and spend less.  What’s not to love?

3. The weather is AMAZING.

Seriously amazing.  The days we spent in Sandestin in December had temperatures ranging from the high 60’s to the low 70’s.  I don’t know about you, but that’s perfect weather in my book.  I don’t actually enjoy being outside in the heat of summer, anyhow.  So, these milder temperatures make for perfect beach days.

4. There are lots of recreational activities available.

It may not be the peak season, but recreational offerings at Sandestin abound.  Some are complimentary with your room, while others do charge a small fee.

  • Bicycle rental
  • FitnessCenter Access
  • Tennis Court Time
  • 4 golf courses and putting green
  • Zipline and Ropes Course
  • Interactive playground
  • Nature trails
  • Seasonal water amenities including kayaks and boogie boards
  • Resort pools and hot tub
  • beach access

That’s just some of what you’ll find at Sandestin.  I cannot wait to tell you about our experience with many of these activities.  But, what I can tell you is that everything we participated in was amazingly fun.

5. There are fun seasonal offerings to participate in.

We visited Sandestin during Christmas time, and the entire large resort was decorated perfectly for the holidays.  Thousands of lights, beautiful displays, large trees and wreaths decorated the buildings and grounds.

Sandestin is host to numerous annual events that you won’t want to miss.  Consider scheduling your visit around one of these festivals so that your family can take part.  A few upcoming events this winter include:

  • Gumbo Festival– February
  • Three Day Holiday Weekend Events – January (MLK Weekend) and February (Presidents Day)
  • Mardi Gras Dog Parade and Fat Tuesday Baytowne Bash Parade – February

6. There is NO WAIT at restaurants.

When you’re hungry, you’re hungry.  My little one is usually good when waiting at a restaurant, but I hate seeing her sit there hungry while we wait for our table.  During the off-season, you don’t have to worry about crowded restaurants.  You can walk right in and get a table.

7. It’s a great opportunity for family beach pictures!

If you’ve been wanting some beautiful family photos, winter time at the beach is the time to get those done.  Considering the beach is essentially void of people, it’s the perfect opportunity to get pictures in a beautiful setting.

8. It’s serene and relaxing.

When you’re surrounded by miles and miles of white sand and crashing waves, it is a really relaxing environment.  In the winter, it’s often just you and the beach.  You can sit on the soft sand, taking in the sounds of the beach that have been bottled onto many sleep and white noise machines.  In the winter, you can experience that firsthand at the beach.

9. There are some amazing shopping opportunities.

Shopping at Sandestin is a really fun experience.  There are a variety of shops on property offering things ranging from clothes to trinkets to dolls.  There’s something to suit everyone’s tastes.  If that’s not enough, you’ll find both an outlet mall and traditional mall a short drive away.

10. It’s the beach and it’s gorgeous ANY time of year.

I was so impressed with our time in Sandestin– the amenities, the grounds, the people working there are all completely top-notch.  I cannot wait to book a future winter beach getaway at this Gulf Coast resort.
