Sweet & Sour Meatballs {Recipe}

When I was growing up, my mother always cooked a full dinner for our family every single night. We would alway sit down together and eat the meal that she worked so hard to make – and it was a great time for us to really bond as family and chat about what happened in each others’ days.

Now that I have moved out of my mom’s house and have started a life with my husband… I have tried to carry on the tradition of preparing meals each night for us. One of the meals that my mom made for our family was Sweet and Sour Meatballs.

I cook these meatballs regularly in our home — and I thought that I’d pass along the delicious recipe with all of you, too!

Ingredients:
For the meatballs:

  • 1 pound of ground beef
  • 1/2 cup of breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup of evaporated milk
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 4 tbsp onions, minced {THIS IS OPTIONAL}

For the sauce: 

  • 1/2 cup of ketchup
  • 1/2 cup of brown sugar
  • 3 Tbsp white vinegar
  • 2 Tbsp onions, minced {This is OPTIONAL}

Directions: 

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F
  • Mix the ground beef, breadcrumbs, evaporated milk, salt, and onions in a bowl.
  • Form them into meatballs and put in a baking dish.
  • In a separate bowl, combine the ketchup, brown sugar, white vinegar, and onions.
  • Pour a small amount of the sauce over each meatball. Save the rest of the sauce for when you’re eating the meatballs {everyone in my family likes EXTRA sauce}
  • Bake the meatballs for one hour!

Here are a few additional tips for those picky eaters in your family:

  • I do NOT like adding the onions in my meatballs OR my sauce — but — Kevin LOVES to have the onions in his meatballs. Therefore, I make my meatballs first and then add onions after my meatballs have been formed without them.
  • Kevin does NOT like vinegar. Therefore… he will NOT eat the sauce that goes with this meal. However – he loves the meatballs plain without the sauce. So, if someone in your family does not like the sauce — simply make it without it! {I cannot even taste the vinegar, but, it’s his personal opinion — so I honor that!}

I usually serve this meal with macaroni and cheese and mashed potatoes — yum yum!
