#shop Start the morning right with Bigelow Tea

While some of you are just getting into back-to-school season, we’ve just completed our fourth week of school here in Georgia.  Granted, we are following our very own homeschool calendar, but the public school system has already been in session for three weeks.  It amazes me just how different school schedules are in various parts of the country.

Regardless of whether you’ve already begun or will be starting in the coming weeks, this is still “back-to-school season” for all of us.  That means getting out of that laid back summer schedule and into an entirely new one for the school year.  For me, that’s been quite the adjustment.  Raileigh was sleeping until after 8am every day, and now that’s when our school day starts!

While I always manage to get Raileigh’s belly full before our day begins, there have been quite a few days when I didn’t find time to feed myself.  However, I know full well that it is incredibly important for me to take time for breakfast.  Just like children can’t focus on an empty stomach, the teacher can’t either!  Instead of thinking about school, my mind drifts to my lack of nourishment.

Lately, I have been turning to Bigelow Tea.  Started over 60 years ago by a mother, this family-owned company grows their tea right where I lived up until a few months ago– Charleston, SC!  They sell a variety of teas, from herbal tea to black teas, decaf teas and green teas.  It is certainly like a tea connoisseurs paradise.

Now, I know there are a lot of teas on the market {I checked it out… you can see over on Google+}.  However, I went with Bigelow for a number of reasons:

  • Each tea bag comes in an individual package for freshness.  Since I often brew my Bigelow Tea one cup at a time, I appreciate this little extra.
  • I feel that in comparison to other tea on the market, Bigelow is a great value.  The quality you get for the price that is charged is superb.
  • Bigelow’s tea comes from the Charleston Tea Plantation and I feel good about supporting an economy I lived in for a number of years.
  • Bigelow Tea is readily available in a variety of flavors at many places, so I don’t have to search far and wide for the tea I love.

As for that extensive flavor variety… we’ve tried quite a few over the years.  French Vanilla and Cinnamon Stick tend to be our go-to flavors.  One of the flavors pairs well with almost all of our favorite breakfast treats, so it’s easy to have a tasty meal without much thought.

However, I do like to try out other flavors because you just never know when one’s going to turn out to be completely amazing and become your new favorite flavor.

That’s what happened with Orange & Spice.

I kind of bought this tea on a whim.  It made me think of fall and I keep wishing in my head it would hurry up and get here.  So, I bought the tea as a mental compromise of sorts.  However, since it’s still warm, I decided to make iced tea.  That’s the awesome thing about Bigelow Tea, though.  It’s easy to make either iced or hot tea using virtually any of their tea varieties.

Generally, I let one tea bag steep in 1/2 cup boiling water for about 5 minutes.  I remove the tea bag, give it a good squeeze, and add some ice cubes.  Voila!  It’s that easy.  You can add sweetners, if you’d like.  However, I usually let the sweetness of my breakfast pastry balance it out.

Want to know my favorite one to prepare when I’m having Orange & Spice tea?

Orange Glazed Mini Cinnamon Rolls.

These adorable little cinnamon rolls are complete perfection.  They’re poppable and delicious– the perfect way to start any day.  They are good leftover… but my guess is that you won’t have any left to try it with!

Want to make some?  Sure you do!  The recipe is easy and the rolls only take about 11 minutes to cook.  So, you’ll have a tasty treat to enjoy in no time.

Orange Glazed Mini Cinnamon Rolls

Makes 16

Ingredients:

  • 1 tube of crescent rolls
  • brown sugar
  • cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp. butter, melted
  • 3/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tbsp. milk
  • 1 tsp. maple syrup
  • 1/8 to 1/4 tsp. orange extract

You’ll start by preheating your oven.  Grease a mini muffin pan and set aside.  Proceed to unroll those crescent rolls.  There should be 4 sets of two triangles that are shaped like rectangles.  Set two sets together {4 triangles total} long sides touching and smoosh the seams together to make a big rectangle.  Use a rolling pin or your hands to flatten the dough to about 1/4″ thick.  Repeat with the remaining dough.  You should have two pieces of rectangular shaped dough now.

Take one and brush 1/2 of the melted butter on top– about 1 tbsp. of butter.  Then, generously sprinkle cinnamon and brown sugar on top.  There’s no set amount.  Just whatever you like!  Carefully roll up the dough into a log, starting on one of the longer sides.  Slice your log into 8 even pieces and place each piece into a cavity in your muffin pan.  Repeat with the remaining dough.

Cook for about a minute less than the package directions.  This should be around 10-11 minutes.

While the rolls are cooking, you can whip up the glaze.  Add the powdered sugar, milk, and maple syrup to a bowl.  Add 1/8 tsp. of the orange extract as well.  Mix until a delicious glaze forms.  Taste the glaze and see if the orange flavor is to your liking.  You MAY want to add 1/8 tsp more {that’s what I do!}.  However, a little orange extract goes a long way and you can’t take it away if you add too much.  So, it’s better to be safe and add it gradually.

When the cinnamon rolls are done, use a spoon to pour glaze over the top.  I recommend removing them from the pan first for clean-up purposes.

Yes– they are as delicious as they sound, and yes– you need to make them very soon.  Just don’t forget to pick up the Orange & Spice Bigelow Tea as an accompaniment.  Your tastebuds will thank you.

Now, you may be wondering why I am so adamant about adding the tea.  After all, most people have at least a cup of coffee every morning, if not more.  Some people I know even enjoy soda with breakfast.  However, of these three options, tea is by far the healthiest option.  This herbal tea actually has ZERO grams of caffeine.  Coffee carries anywhere between 100 and 120 milligrams of caffeine, which is not the best thing for your body.  The tea also has no calories, no fat, and no sodium.  There’s many more benefits to drinking tea and I encourage you to read all of them on the Bigelow Tea website.

Have you tried Bigelow Tea before?  I’d love to know your favorite varieties so I can look for them next time I need some more tea!
