Shelby’s Snack Shack Game from Educational Insights {Review}

I shouldn’t be surprised that my daughter thoroughly enjoys playing board games.  After all, she was born to two board game fanatics who have been playing games together for fifteen years now.

Whenever new games are released, my family enjoys gathering around the table together after dinner to check them out.  Recently, we had the opportunity to play a brand new game from Educational Insights, one of my favorite companies for toys and products that can simultaneously educate and entertain.

Shelby’s Snack Shack is an adorable game aimed at children ages 4 and up.  Amidst the beautiful graphics and game pieces, your family will practice the basic math skills of numbers and counting.  The premise of the game is that Shelby the dog buried all of her bones on the beach and needs your help to retrieve them.

The game comes complete with everything you’ll need to play:

  • Game Board
  • Shelby Squeezer
  • 40 Bones
  • 4 Bowls
  • 1 Double Spinner
  • Game Guide

Play is simple, yet engaging.  There are two spinners.  You spin the first to determine play.  Land on Shelby and you get to collect bones.  However, a sneaky seagull means you’ll lose some bones and a chewed up flip-flop results in a lost turn.  If you happen to of landed on Shelby, you’ll spin the second spinner to see how many bones you get to collect.  If your spin landed on seagull, you’ll have to spin to see the number of bones you lose.

Hopefully, you landed on Shelby and are ready for the real fun to begin.  Grab the cute little Shelby Squeezer and collect the allotted number of bones.  Use this opportunity to count the bones as you collect them.  If your child is younger, you can assist in the process.  If your child is a bit older, challenge them to count on their own.

My family had an absolutely magnificent time playing Shelby’s Snack Shack.  We laughed together as Raileigh learned to use the Shelby Squeezer, we counted together as each of collected bones, and we just had a wonderful time playing a game together.

Raileigh’s been counting proficiently for some time, but Shelby’s Snack Shack served as the perfect way to practice this skill.  However, we were having such a fun time that it wasn’t evident to Raileigh that she was learning at the same time.

Shelby’s Snack Shack is available online at Educational Insights as well as other specialty stores and online retailers.
