Keep Little Ones Safe with a SANUS TV Mount {Giveaway}

Disclosure:  I received no compensation for this post.  Mounting your flat panel television is something that I feel strongly about and I am pleased to offer you this giveaway, courtesy of SANUS.

It’s been a little over two weeks since we moved into our new home.  Already, I am absolutely IN LOVE with this beautiful space that we get to call home.

Of course, there have been things we’ve had to do and adjustments we’ve had to make to ensure that us and all of our belongings fit well into our new home.

I’d say that our living room has been the area that we have had to work the hardest on.  When we found out that we were moving, we decided that we wanted to get new living room furniture.  So, we sold all of our old living room furniture {seriously… every last bit} at a ginormous garage sale that we had.  For the past few weeks, a beanbag has been the sole piece of furniture in our large living room.  But… we have finally found some furniture that we love and is within our budget, so hopefully it will be arriving soon.

Then, there is the issue of our television and all of the corresponding electronics.  The set-up in our new house is really nice, but far different than anything we’ve had before.  The TV is meant to be mounted above the mantel, and everything else can be connected and then hidden away in built-in cabinets.

We’ve never mounted our TV before and discovered that the flat design actually sat just fine on the mantel.  So, that’s where it has been sitting since we arrived.  I honestly had decided that it would be just fine like that.

Just days after making this decision, I learned that flat panel televisions actually have multiple safety risks associated with them. Due to increasing size and new ultra thin designs, today’s flat panel TVs can easily tip over when bumped or pulled, toppling off of furniture and causing injury or even death.

Wow– that’s honestly not something that had even crossed my mind.  However, with a little one who likes to run and definitely bumps into things from time to time, this new piece of information certainly got my attention.

A 2011 US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) report on flat panel TV safety revealed:

  • A child is killed every three weeks from an unsecured TV
  • Every 45 minutes a child visits an emergency room due to a TV tip-over related injury
  • Between 2000 and 2011, 215 fatalities have resulted from TV tip-over
  • An estimated 17,000 people each year, the majority of which are children, are treated for injuries from TV tip-overs
  • Reported cases have increased almost 25% from 2006 to 2010, and over the last 10 years, injuries have increased by 31%
