When a new movie is released from Disney, I’m not sure who in my family gets more excited.  My husband would swear that it is me– and that’s probably true.  However, I am lucky to have a little four year old who is also giddy with excitement, so at least I have a partner in crime!

As you know, the newest animated feature film from Disney hit theaters last Friday.  Monsters University returns our favorite lovable monsters to the big screen in a prequel that tells how Mike and Sulley came to be friends.

When we attended Disney Social Media Moms in May, we had the amazing opportunity to preview the movie at the theater in Downtown Disney.  I had high expectations, as Monsters Inc. is a family favorite.  Monsters University certainly did not disappoint.  I was surrounded by other families, with children of all ages, and each of us stayed glued to the screen until it was time for the credits to roll.

We haven’t gone to see Monsters University since the official release.  But– we have plans to!  This movie is just so fun, providing laughs for the entire family.  It’s a movie that we all want to see again!

Of course, that doesn’t mean there is no Monsters University magic happening around here!

One afternoon, we decided to have a Monsters University themed snack party!  To coincide with the release of the movie, some of our favorite products debuted some awesome themed packaging and other exclusive Monsters University products.We took a few of them and had our own little party at home.  We had refreshing Juicy Juice, Monsters University Fruit Snacks, AND some adorable cupcakes that we whipped up.

Want to create your own Monsters Inc. snack party?  It’s super easy and delightfully entertaining. You can see our entire shopping trip to pick up supplies over on Google+.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Juicy Juice Monster Drink— We went with the Apple Juice Slim Pack entirely because they are the PERFECT Mike Wazowski color.  However, the Juicy Juice FruitiFuls, Slim Pack, 48 oz, or 64 oz products all feature fun packaging
  • Monsters University fruit snacks
  • White Cake Mix {and any additional ingredients listed on the back of the box that are needed to create the cake mix}
  • Vanilla Frosting
  • Neon Food Coloring
  • Monsters University 1″ Mini’s 4 Pack {available in the Toy Section, exclusively at Walmart}
  • Sprinkles {optional}
  • Cupcake Liners {optional}

Instructions:

Luckily, the Juicy Juice and the fruit snacks are already prepared!  So, enjoying those tasty treats is as simple as opening the package.  Go ahead and set them aside so we can get started on the cupcakes.

A side note– I decided to go with a box cake mix entirely because we just moved and I am still trying to get settled in.  Easy was just the way to go this time.  However, if you have a basic white cake mix recipe you love or a made-from-scratch vanilla frosting recipe, feel free to use those.

Start by preheating your oven to the temperature at which you’ll bake the cupcakes.  Now, you’ll begin preparing the cake batter as directed.  Once you’ve got it mixed, divide the batter evenly between three bowls.  It doesn’t have to be perfect– just do your best.  We’re going to turn the batter in these bowls three different colors.  We used the Neon food coloring because the colors come out really close to those of our favorite monsters!

We turned one bowl of batter blue, one green, and one purple.  There’s no set amount of food coloring drops.  Start with 5 and continue adding them a few at a time until your batter is the desired color.

Go ahead and add your cupcake liners to the muffin tin or spray with non-stick spray if you opted to not use cupcake liners.  Begin to fill the cupcakes with the green batter.  In case you hadn’t figured it out, these are going to become our Mike Wazowski cupcakes!

Once those cupcakes are done baking {or use another muffin tin if you have one}, we’ll get started on the Sulley cupcakes.  Use a spoon to add a small amount of the blue batter to the bottom of a cupcake liner.  Then, using another spoon, add even smaller amounts of purple batter almost like dots on top of the blue batter.  Continue this cycle until the liner is as full as you desire.  Repeat until you are out of blue batter.

We used the remaining purple batter to make some solid purple cupcakes.  The purple works quite well for characters just as Art and Randall.

Once your cupcakes are done baking and have cooled, it’s time to frost them!  You can choose to tint the frosting as well.  However, I decided to go with basic white.

That’s because I found these complete awesome 1 inch figures in the toy department at Walmart.  They are adorable and represent our favorite characters from Monsters University!  I knew immediately when I saw them that these little figure would make the perfect cupcake toppers.  They actually sell three different sets of the Monsters University 1″ Mini’s 4 Pack and I couldn’t resist– we got all four!

Once we were done with our snack, they make the perfect little toy for Raileigh.  She can recreate her favorite scenes from the movie with these little figures.

Anyhow– back to the cupcakes!  Once you’ve finished frosting, you can gently place one of the figures on top of the completed cupcake.  We also happened to have a big thing of Halloween sprinkles in the pantry and the colors mixed well with our Monsters University cupcakes.  So, we added those to a few cupcakes as well.

Now– it’s FINALLY snack time.  Gather your cupcakes, your Disney drink, and your Monsters University fruit snacks.  I suggest pulling out your copy of Monsters Inc. and camping out in front of the television for an afternoon viewing party.  You can also head outside and enjoy this beautiful {hot} weather we’ve been having.  Regardless of where you decide to indulge, I can guarantee that this simple Monsters University snack party will certainly put a smile on your face.

After all of our fun was over, we entered the Juicy Juice Monster-Sized Sweepstakes with the special code found on the Juicy Juice product that we bought. There are lots of fun prizes you can win as well— like a trip to Pixar Studios!  That would certainly be an amazing trip that I know my whole family would enjoy.

Since it’s been out for a week… have any of you gone to see Monsters University?  What did you think?

Remember to keep the magic going at home with the fun Monsters University products I mentioned above.  Also, make sure to connect with the brands so you can find even more monster-sized fun:
