Wreck-It Ralph ‘One Sweet Race’ {Book Review}

Since long before Wreck-It Ralph debuted in theaters, I wanted to see it.  The plot, the characters– they were all so incredibly appealing to me!

I thought I would have no trouble getting my daughter to see the movie with me.  It’s a Disney cartoon, after all!  However, countless attempts at getting her to the movie theater with me were fruitless.  She was convinced that the movie was only for boys {and she went to see Cars 2 with no issues… hmmm…}.

I showed her trailers, I explained the plot to her… but nothing would work.  She just did not want to see Wreck-It Ralph.

So, I pouted in the corner, deciding that I would just have to watch it alone once the movie came out on Blu-Ray.

Then, one day, she came home after spending the night with my mom and sister.  She proudly announced that Aunt Jesse took her to see Wreck-It Ralph.  What!?  And– she LOVED it.

Now that Raileigh is truly a Wreck-It Ralph fan {and ironically one of the biggest I know!}, it’s been fun to explore the world of this new Disney movie with her.

Recently, we have been reading a really awesome picture book from Wreck-It Ralph called One Sweet Race.  The book stars her favorite character, Vanellope von Schweetz, in an original story about the film’s spunky heroine.

The story takes place after the movie.  It’s set in the video game Sugar Rush and features Vanellope as well as other Sugar Rush favorites we met in the film.  Just like Wreck-It Ralph, you’ll see the theme of friendship running throughout this delightful tale.

I’ve got to say– the illustrations are really my favorite part of the story.  They are done by one of the artists who worked on the film and they are truly superb. Even portions of the text engage visually, with words like “pop” and “sploosh” written in fun text alongside the illustrations.

This story has been read numerous times since it arrived, both as a read-aloud and by Raileigh independently.  We are both so smitten with One Sweet Race that I am certain it will continue to be enjoyed many times in the future as well.
