Take Back Your Morning With Seattle’s Best Coffee

Last June, after over nine years with his company, Darren got a new job.

This was a scary process, but oh so exciting for my family on many levels.  In addition to offering a higher salary and a closer proximity to our house, this new job also meant that Darren would get to spend more time at home.

At his past job, he was scheduled for ten hour shifts, five days per week.  However, he rarely left on time and often spent additional time at work.  With his new job, he would be able to go into work two full hours later.  Plus, there would be no working late, as his new employer prefers that everyone works no more than forty hours a week.

Right away, we made plans for those additional two hours in the morning.  After all, we were already used to getting up at the earlier time, so we might as well take advantage of it!  I thought that some quiet time in the morning with my husband, enjoying breakfast together, sounded like the absolute perfect way to start the day.

Want to know how long that lasted?  Oh… about a week.

Slowly, we began staying up a little later at night and getting up a little later in the morning.  Then, my husband began going to the chiropractor three times per week for back issues, and those sessions were scheduled before he had to be at work.

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about that wonderful week of getting up early to enjoy some quiet time with my husband before our daughter woke up.  It was wonderful– really wonderful.  So, I have decided to take back my morning.

Our morning time together centered around breakfast and I really wanted to continue that.  I’ll be honest– if I’m not up to fix something, there is a good chance my husband will walk out the door with any empty stomach.  This is never the best way to start the day.

To get started on reclaiming my morning, I headed to the Take Back Your Morning site, an awesome spot created by Seattle’s Best Coffee.  It’s for people like me {and most likely you!} who want their morning back.  And, let’s face it– where better to start than with coffee?

The awesome thing about the site is that by telling them how you get back your morning, you can win free coffee.  Yes, you heard me right– free coffee!  I didn’t win an entire bag of coffee, but I DID get a coupon!

I guess you can figure out what I did with it, right?  I headed straight to the store to buy some coffee and start getting my morning back.  {you can read all about my shopping trip over on Google+}.  My Walmart was pretty low on their Seattle’s Best Coffee stock.  I knew from the Seattle’s Best website that the packaged coffee is available in five intensity levels, with several additional flavored options.  Some of the options were completely wiped out.

However, I discovered an option fairly quickly that I knew would be perfect for my home– Seattle’s Best Hazelnut Flavored Ground Coffee.  Just check out the description:

“Our Hazelnut Flavored Coffee takes our smooth delicious coffee and swirls it with the toasty flavor of hazelnut.  A rich, cozy blend that will have you dreaming about your favorite bakery.”

Doesn’t that sound… well… perfect?  It got me thinking as well.  I’d found our coffee and it made me think about Darren’s favorite bakery– which happens to be our kitchen!  I could whip up his favorite breakfast of coffee cake and together they would make the perfect duo.  So, I grabbed the ingredients I didn’t have on hand and headed home with a plan to Take Back My Morning.

Just because this coffee cake is SO incredible, I am going to share the recipe with you.  It really pairs wonderfully with the Seattle’s Best Hazelnut Flavored Ground Coffee, so you’ll want to pick up a bag to go along with your tasty treat.

Ingredients for the Cake:

  • 1 stick of room temperature unsalted butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 12 oz. sour cream

Ingredients for the Topping:

  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar

Directions:

1.  Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2.  Cream butter and sugar with a mixer.  Add eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each.

3.  Stir flour, baking soda and powder, and salt together in a separate bowl.

4.  Alternate adding dry ingredients, sour cream, and vanilla into creamed ingredients until everything has been added.  Mix well.  Set aside

5.  Combine all topping ingredients.

6.  Pour half of your batter into a greased 9″ x 13″ pan.  Add half of topping, then our remaining batter on top.  Top with remaining topping.

7.  Bake for 30- 35 minutes.

8.  Enjoy!

It’s been a few weeks now, and we’re pretty smitten with our new morning routine.  It’s much easier to stick to it when you’ve got something tasty to look forward to.  I’ll admit– every morning hasn’t gone as planned.  We’re relocating very soon, and some nights have gone later than we’d like as we try to pack boxes and get ready to move.  However, we’re making great strides to reclaim our quiet time together in the morning, and I look forward to fully implementing our new routine once we have settled into our new home.
