Before I got married, I lived at the same address my entire life. Little did I know that Darren and I would QUICKLY make up for it!
Including our initial move when we were married in December of 2004, we have moved 6 times and lived at 5 different residences. Now, we are preparing for what will hopefully be the last move for quite a while.
Needless to say, there are days when I feel like a professional mover! Each time we relocate, I pick up numerous tips and tricks to make the next move go more smoothly. By now, I think we have it down pretty well.
We won’t be moving out of this home until May 18. However, we’ll be vacationing at Disney for around 12 days prior to that. And… our new home won’t be ready until June 7, so we’ll be putting our stuff in storage and staying with the in-laws for a few weeks.
That leaves us about 3 weeks to get everything ready to go.
My goal is to make this move the best we have ever experienced. We are purging like mad people, with literally about half our stuff going to a ginormous garage sale we’re hosting the last weekend of April. And– I’ve already decided that if the stuff doesn’t sell, there is no way it is coming back into our home.
That leaves the stuff we plan on taking with us. I want those things to be perfectly organized, ready to be put away when the truck gets unloaded at our destination. However, getting our things organized is quite the task.
When we moved to South Carolina, we chose to go with a smaller home. The housing market is significantly more expensive here, and we needed to stay within a certain budget. So, rooms that had their own space previously had to be combined.
|Sorry for the crazy bad lighting. This room has the WORST natural light!|
For example, we’ve used an extra “bonus” space as a play room and office. Yes– a weird combination, but it’s just how it worked out. The problem is, the play area kind of took over and the office got pushed into a small alcove in the corner. Office supplies, bills, and other things traditionally kept in an office just became messy, unorganized piles. Yep– that’s it pictured above.
Now, this is actually after we’ve done a bit of organizing. I know it doesn’t look like it… but you should have seen it before. In all fairness, we are knee-deep in moving and it always gets worse before it gets better!
So, how does one go about tackling such an unorganized pile of chaos? I am going in armed with a Brother P-Touch Desktop Labeler. This easy-to-use label maker is armed with features that are sure to make my task monumentally easier:
