At the beginning of the year, I declared this to be MY year.  I am taking control of things that have slowly became less and less of a priority– my appearance and overall health, my family’s health, our eating habits, and daily exercise.

In an effort to lose those pesky pounds that have been hanging around since my daughter was born almost FIVE years ago, I began implementing a daily exercise routine into my life.  In the past, I have used my two bad knees as an excuse of sorts to steer clear of hard exercise.  However, I have realized that I am doing myself no favors and not being as active actually makes me quite unhappy.

In addition to helping me build muscle and shed fat, exercising regularly is also contributing to my overall health and well-being.  I am gaining endurance and building up weak muscles around my knee which will help to prevent me from re-injuring it.

As a whole, my family is also eating much healthier than we have in the past.  I’ll be honest– for many years, I didn’t pay much attention to ingredients or what we were eating at all.  We just ate what we liked!  Now, we aren’t overweight, but this is still not a healthy habit to be in.

So, with an open mind, I began incorporating more vegetables and fruit into our daily diets.  I was shocked to find numerous veggies that I loved and previously thought I hadn’t.  In fact, I am smitten with broccoli and could eat it every single day!

I am also making sure that we really care for our bodies– no one gets to let themselves go at all!  We are taking vitamins and using other preventative measures to stay feeling good.  I also make sure to have everything on hand that we will need just in case someone gets a scrape or starts to not feel well.

Now– all of this is pretty easy to do at home,  But, what happens when you are away from home for an extended period of time?

That’s where I am at right now.  In just 13 days we’re heading to our favorite place– Walt Disney World.  We’ll be enjoying some down time relaxing at a resort, followed by the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration, followed by several additional days in the parks as a family.  It will be a long trip– 13 days and 12 nights.

Disney will be our home for that time period… especially considering our current home will be completely boxed up waiting for the new one to be ready!  Needless to say, I have got to be prepared.  Our healthy lifestyle will not go out the window just because we are away.

That’s where Walgreens and their Steps With Balance Rewards Program comes in.

Balance Rewards is the rewards program from Walgreens.  It rewards you for making purchases, filling prescriptions, and even exercise.  Yes, you read that right– Walgreens actually rewards you for getting up and being active.

So, how does it work?  Let me walk you through it.  Head on over to Steps With Balance Rewards and we’ll get started.

Click “get started”.  If you’re new to Walgreens.com, you will need to create a new account.  If you have created an account in the past, you can simply log in.  I have registered in the past, so I just entered my username and password.  Then, I fill out some additional information to join the Steps Program, including phone number, birthday, and zip code.  It took me about 20 seconds to fill out everything they needed.

Now, I am all set to start earning!

In fact, I started earning right after signing up.  You see, this past week my steps have increased a lot as I have been training for the Fun Run at the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration that is coming up in a few weeks.  Within your Activity Journal {located in the “your account” section of your online account} you can actually enter miles walked or ran in the previous week.  So, I got to record some activity right away.  You get 20 points for each mile logged, so if you’re a serious runner, the points are going to add up quickly!

This is also where you can set goals for yourself.  Want to run a total of 10 miles next week? Enter that here.  With the Steps With Balance Rewards Program you can easily track your progress– and there just might be some bonus incentives for reaching your goals as well. Talk about motivation!

After getting all my miles entered, I headed off to my local Walgreens to pick up a few things for our upcoming Disney trip {you can see my entire shopping trip on Google+}.  As I mentioned, it is really important to me that we stay healthy, even when traveling.  With a Walgreens within one mile of my house, it is the ideal destination to get all the health-related items that we need before leaving.  In addition to having a prime location, I get added Bonus Rewards points on certain purchases and additional savings on other ones.

Now, here’s the great part– You don’t need a physical card to reap the benefits.  I think this is awesome since I already have far too many membership cards to keep up with {I’m sure you understand this!}.  In store, they can look up your account using the phone number you provided or by showing your mobile card located within the Walgreens app.

I am already thinking about what I will do with my first reward from #BalanceRewards.  Maybe some frozen yogurt is in order?  For now, I think I will reward myself with some of the fun ideas over on Aisle Share!

If you’re looking for something to encourage you to get going, then you definitely need to check out the Step Up to Win Sweepstakes.   This week you have the chance at winning  RedBox Codes, Brita Water Pitchers, Walgreens Gift Cards, a FitBit Zip, and more.  Each day that you enter, you get more chances to win the daily prize.  Plus, you’ll be entered into the Grand Prize drawing – a trip to one of the The Biggest Loser‘s Resorts {contest ends May 1}.

I want to encourage all of you to check out Steps With Balance Rewards and see the many ways that it can benefit you and your family.  In the meantime, make sure to connect with Walgreens:
