I really love the author of this book, Elizabeth Hartman. Her blog, Oh Fransson!, was one of the very first quilting blogs that I ever discovered, and it still remains a favorite in my blog reader today. Though I don’t think my skills will ever measure up to those of Elizabeth, I enjoy looking at her work and the beautiful techniques that she uses. She has an eye for fabric choices and design, and her style is wonderfully modern.
I have been completely smitten with her first book- The Practical Guide to Patchwork– for some time now. So, of course, when I heard about this release, I could not wait to get my hands on a copy.
Modern Patchwork is stunning. It is filled with 12 glorious quilt projects, each bold and beautiful. The best part is that Elizabeth teaches you how to make each and every one of them.
For every quilt, there are diagrams, photos, and step-by-step directions to help you complete your creation. You will find photos of individual quilt blocks as well as at least one full size photograph of each quilt. You’ll also find a plethora of tips that can be used on absolutely any quilt you to decide to tackle within this book or elsewhere.
With all that being said, I definitely don’t think this book is a project book for beginners. The subtitle of the book describes it well– 12 Quilts to Take You Beyond the Basics. If you are a beginning quilter (like me), you probably won’t be ready to complete the projects in this book. However, I have still enjoyed having and reading this book as it is great eye candy! Plus, it gives me inspiration and motivation to continue and improve my quilting skills.
I did pick up some tips and tricks I can use, though. Elizabeth notes that she always presses her seams open when she quilts. I did not do this with my first quilt (I just ironed to one side). I can fully agree that pressing seams open is a better choice as it creates less bulk around the seams for the finished quilt top.
Are you an experienced quilter who is looking for new projects to complete? Or, are you a relatively beginner quilter like me who is looking for inspiration? Regardless, Modern Patchwork is a must-have book for your collection.
I am excited to announce that one lucky reader is going to receive a copy of Modern Patchwork by Elizabeth Hartman.
