Recently, my family had the opportunity to spend a weekend at the lovely Callaway Gardens.
Our first stop upon arrival? The Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center, of course! This little, humid slice of Heaven is one of my absolute favorite places on Earth. In case you haven’t had the pleasure of visiting before, let me tell you a bit more about the Center.
The Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center is North America’s largest glass enclosed butterfly conservatory. There are over 1,000 butterflies inhabiting the center, representing more than 50 different species. If you’ll look upon entering the center, you’ll notice a sign displaying the butterfly count for the day. Every visit to the center is truly unique as a variety of factors influence the butterflies you will see:
- Available Sunshine
- Season of the Year
- Recently Received Butterfly Shipments
- Temperature Fluctuations
- Stability of the Ecosystem
You can pick up a butterfly identification card upon entering the center so that you’ll know which specific species of butterflies you encounter.
I do have my favorite species and those that I really hope to see whenever we visit. Some of the butterflies at the top of my list include the Grecian Showmaker, Great Mormon, and Paper Kite. We were fortunate to see each of these butterflies on our recent visit.
In addition to the conservatory, there are other things to do and see at the Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center as well. Outside, a beautifully landscaped lawn surrounds the center. There are swings and benches to rest upon. Inside, you will find a gift shop (my favorite at Callaway Gardens) and butterfly artwork throughout the lobby. There is also a stunning chandelier featuring butterflies. If you time your visit right, you can also sit in on the Butterflies 101 talk.
A visit to the Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center is included in Gardens Admission to Callaway Gardens.
I will leave you with a video montage of our time at the Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center, complete with a few thoughts from my daughter.
