Owl-Melia… you know it’s cute! I made this hand applique onesie for Miss Amelia and thought I’d share a simple tutorial with you guys! Anyone with a shirt or onesie, some scraps and a needle and thread can make one.
I LOVE hand applique and the character it adds to your design. The best part about it is it does not need to, nor will it ever be perfect and that is what makes it so cute! There are many different ways to do a hand applique and tons of stitches, but I chose the very basic.
The Owl-Melia Hand Applique Onesie:
- Shirt or Onesie
- Scraps of fabric
- Steam-a-seam2 (hobby lobby)
- Embroidery floss
- 2 Buttons
First print out this pdf with the pattern pieces for the applique and cut them out.
Cut the body out of one fabric and then the wing, ears and nose out of a contrasting fabric. I also used the fabric from the body for the inner circle of the eye and white fabric for the large circle.
Stick your pieces onto the Steam-A-Seam and cut them out.
Peel the paper off the back of the pieces and apply the body to the middle of the onesie (or shirt) and then each other piece as you see below.
Iron the design onto the onesie, but just press the iron down and don’t slide it around.
Stitch around each edge of your owl in the embroidery floss of your choice.
Sew the buttons into the middle of the small circle.
Apply adorable onesie to even more adorable baby.
