Tuesday evening, we were treated to a screening of the all-new Pirates of the Caribbean movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
Just in case you haven’t heard all about this exciting new movie, let me fill you in:
U.S. Release Date: May 20, 2011
Screen Story and Screenplay by: Ted Elliott & Terry Rossio
Based on characters created by: Ted Elliott & Terry Rossio and Stuart Beattie and Jay Wolpert
Suggested by the novel by: Tim Powers
Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Rob Marshall, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” captures the fun, adventure and humor that ignited the hit franchise—this time in Disney Digital 3D™. Johnny Depp returns to his iconic role of Captain Jack Sparrow in an action-packed adventure. Crossing paths with the enigmatic Angelica (Penélope Cruz), he’s not sure if it’s love—or if she’s a ruthless con artist who’s using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the “Queen Anne’s Revenge,” the ship of the legendary pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn’t know whom to fear more: Blackbeard or Angelica, with whom he shares a mysterious past. The international cast includes franchise vets Geoffrey Rush as the vengeful Captain Hector Barbossa and Kevin R. McNally as Captain Jack’s longtime comrade Joshamee Gibbs, plus Sam Claflin as a stalwart missionary and Astrid Bergès-Frisbey as a mysterious mermaid.
All three of us- Darren, Raileigh, and I- headed out to Regal Cinemas at Atlantic Station. Yes, I took my two year old to the movie. This was her first time to see a movie in theaters, and I had high hopes that she would enjoy the show and behave well. In fact, she did extremely well. She absolutely loved the movie (well, all except for one small scene) and has been talking about it ever since!
I was a bit apprehensive going in to the movie. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is the fourth movie in the Pirates empire. Sequels can tend to not be as great as the original and often times leave a lot to be desired. Additionally, two of my favorite stars from the first three movies- Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom- were not along for the fourth installment. Regardless, I was excited to see what the movie had to offer.
I don’t want to give anything away because I want you all to enjoy the surprise and excitement for yourself. But, I will say that the movie was great- truly a must see! In my opinion Johnny Depp did the best job he’s done thus far with his portrayal Captain Jack Sparrow. We were able to get acquainted with several other old favorites such as Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa and Kevin McNally as Gibbs. Then, we were introduced to some exciting new characters, including Penelope Cruz as Angelica.
We saw the movie in Disney Digital 3D and this added some spectacular elements to the screening. It made certain moments within the movie far more dramatic and entertaining. The plot also contained some wonderful twists and turns that kept the suspense high and my curiosity peaked.
Here are some final thoughts from my entire family:
Desi: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides comes out this Friday. Really, you MUST go see it!
Raileigh: I liked it. They fought. They went bang-bang.
Darren: Captain Jack is a funny guy. I enjoyed his sense of humor a lot. He has lots of funny one line quips that you have to be quick to get.
Disclosure: I received no monetary compensation for this post. We were provided with complimentary passes to a screening of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. All opinions are my own.
