New App from Oceanhouse Media-- Five Little Monkeys Sitting in a Tree

As a child, I remember Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed being read to me at school. Those fun-loving monkeys must have made an impression on me, because I still remember that vividly today. When Raileigh was born, I was delighted to receive a new and updated version of the book as a gift from a friend.

I quickly learned that the tales of the five monkeys had grown to include more than simply jumping on the bed. Now, the monkeys play hide and seek, wash the car, go shopping, and more! There are quite a few tales from Eileen Christelow centering around the Five Little Monkeys and the mischief they often find themselves involved in.

Recently the third Five Little Monkeys omBook (Oceanhouse Media Digital Book) was released. It is entitled Five Little Monkeys Sitting in a Tree.

Here is a bit more about this exciting new digital book, as taken from the Oceanhouse Media website.

Five Little Monkeys Sitting in a Tree

Written by: Eileen Christelow

Available for: iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch

The five little monkeys and their mama go down to the river to have supper. While mama takes a nap, the five little monkeys climb a tree and tease Mr. Crocodile! The easliy excitable monkeys taunt him, "Can't catch me!", they say. One by one Mr. Crocodile SNAPS at them! Mama is frightened and watching from the shore. These monkeys are clever, but can they outsmart the cunning Mr. Crocodile and get away safely!?

This is perhaps one of our favorite Five Little Monkeys tales. At preschool, Raileigh was taught an adorable little song that centered around the synopsis of this story. So, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to share this new omBook with her.

There are three ways in which this book can be read:

  • "Read to Me" — listen to the narrated story with words highlighted as they are read
  • "Read it Myself" — read the book in its traditional form
  • "Auto Play" — plays like a movie, automatically reading and turning pages. Great for younger children!

I found out recently that Darren and I tend to share these fabulous digital books from Oceanhouse Media with Raileigh differently. He prefers to use "Auto Play". He'll start the book, and he and Raileigh will sit there, enjoying the story together. The narration really is wonderful- crisp, clear enunciation and enjoyable to listen to. Throughout the story, Raileigh likes to play with the Picture/ Word Association feature. This allows you to touch a picture and hear the word associated with it. The word will also float onto the screen so that you can see it in print as well. This is a wonderful feature to help increase vocabulary.

I also use "auto play", but generally when we are on-the-go and it isn't feasible for me to read to her. However, if we are at home or waiting somewhere, I prefer the "read it myself" mode. This is most like a print book-- well, other than the fact that it is on an electronic device. I read the story to her, and we can go at our own pace. She can still use the Picture/ Word Association feature, and I can throw in comprehension questions throughout.

I really like that Oceanhouse Media offers a variety of ways in which you can enjoy their omBooks. It allows us to use different modes, based on who's reading and where we are.
