This Weekend at Georgia State Parks


I am so excited that Darren actually has the entire weekend off. This really doesn’t occur very often, so I cherish it when it does.

Of course, I have been scoping out all of the activities that Georgia State Parks is offering this weekend. There are so many great things going on.

So, why not see what park activity you would enjoy doing and get out and enjoy this beautiful weather?

Outdoor Adventure Weekend 2011
Friday April 15, 2011- Sunday April 17, 2011
Cloudland Canyon State Park, Rising Fawn GA

Enjoy orienteering, outdoor yoga, archery, disc golf, backpacking basics, caving, fishing, tractor rides, kid’s activities, a climbing wall, night hikes, hunting and fishing simulators, and concessions. (Rappelling has been canceled.) Friday hike begins at 7:30 p.m. Some activities require registration the day of the event. Activity fees plus $5 parking. 706-657-4050.

Marsh Kayak Trip

Crooked River State Park, St. Marys GA

This moderately strenuous, 3-hour paddle is through the salt marshes around Crooked River. Paddlers will watch for birds, dolphin and other wildlife while learning about the wonders of the marsh. Participants must be 6 years of age or more and accompanied by a parent or guardian if under 18 years old. Register in advance. $35-$95, depending on number of people, plus $5 parking. 912-882-5256.

Twilight Canoe

Spring Wildflowers Around Unicoi (Earth Day Event)

The wildflower program will begin Friday with a slide show and lecture. There will be wildflower walks that will help both the novice and experienced enthusiast to better appreciate the colorful and fascinating world of mountain wildflowers. Group Hayrides

Spring Wildflower Fest

Bear on the Square Mountain Festival

Cathead Creek Canoe Trip

Kawoni: Cherokee Time of the Flower Moon Program

These guided hikes depart from Panola’s nature center and are for people in good physical condition. This hike allows park visitors to see Panola Mountain up close, as the Ranger explains the reasons Panola Mountain is protected, and what we can all do to preserve the natural beauty of granite outcrops. Bring sturdy shoes, water, bug spray, and your camera! The Panola Mountain hike starts at 10am and generally lasts 2-3 hours. Rain or shine. Tree Top Excursions: Introduction Climb

Join us “on rope” for an adventure exploring the canopy above. This is an introductory climb to Canopy-Adventure-Research-Educational Technical Tree Climbing (CARE TTC). Participants will use rope and harness for this moderately strenuous activity. Meeting at Naomi-Ruth Climbing Tree. We recommend arriving 30 minutes before each program. Panola Mountain Night Hike

Join us for an enchanted evening as we hike to the mountain top under the watchful eye of the full moon. We’ll head out just before sunset and enjoy the stroll as the moon begins to rise. Easter Egg Hunt

Trembling Earth Hike in the Okefenokee

New Manchester History Hike

This mile-long hike (easy to moderate) will lead us to the five story ruins of the Civil War-era New Manchester textile mill and focus on the history of the Sweetwater Creek Valley. Woodland Butterflies

Spring is a great time of year to see butterflies. This 2-mile hike will cover the Red Trail up to the mill, then the Blue Trail back to the Interpretive Center. Bring a camera or close-focus binoculars for memories that will last a lifetime. We will see spring butterflies like Spring Azures, Zebra Swallowtails, and Falcate Orange-Tips. “Ruins to Rapids” Full Moon Hike

This 1.5 mile hike is moderately difficult and goes inside the Civil War-era textile mill ruins of New Manchester and follows the lovely rapids (up to class IV) of Sweetwater Creek.
