Rapunzel is the heroine, the protagonist, in the Disney film Tangled. Rapunzel as a young adult is voiced by Mandy Moore, and as a child is voiced by Delaney Rose Stein. Rapunzel begins her life with magical powers. Her mother, the queen, fell ill and drank a magic potion derived from a magical plant owned by Mother Gothel. The magical powers are transferred into the hair of the then unborn child.

Soon after birth, Rapunzel is kidnapped by Mother Gothel so that she will still have access to the healing powers (which she uses as a personal fountain of youth). To ensure Rapunzel stays put so that Mother Gothel can use her hair, she locks Rapunzel away in an isolated tower, never sharing her heritage with her.

Rapunzel’s hair grows to be 70 feet long, and she finds many uses for it. She can let down her hair for Mother Gothel to climb up into the tower. She can also use to to lift herself as she paints the tower walls.

Every year, out the tower windows, Rapunzel witnesses a festival of lights in which lanterns float through the air. The beauty of this captivates Rapunzel and she longs to see the festival in person. She has no idea that the lanterns are released in remembrance of her, the long ago kidnapped princess. Even after pleading with her, Mother Gothel refuses to let Rapunzel leave to see the festival of lights.

For her 18th birthday, Rapunzel asks Mother Gothel to get her a special white paint made of seashells. It will be a three day journey to acquire the paint. Mother Gothel agrees, and this gives Rapunzel long enough to escape to the festival. She travels with her new companion, Flynn Rider. However, at the festival Mother Gothel hires two thugs, The Stabbington Brothers, to kidnap Rapunzel, then fakes her rescue. She takes Rapunzel back to the tower.

However, Rapunzel has realized the truth. She knows that she is the kidnapped princess for whom the lanterns are released each year. Rapunzel confronts Mother Gothel about this. Mother Gothel bounds Rapunzel and prepares to move her to a new hiding spot. In the meantime, Flynn Rider returns and is stabbed by Mother Gothel. In desperation, Rapunzel agrees to go with Mother Gothel is she can be released just long enough to heal Flynn Rider. He doesn’t want to see Rapunzel held captive forever, so Flynn Rider uses a shard of glass to cut off Rapunzel’s hair. The healing power is lost, and he hair turns brown.

Rapunzel was reunited with her parents at the castle. After several years, he love Flynn Rider proposed, and they went on to rule the kingdom for many years to come.
