In Tangled, we first see Flynn Rider as he is escaping the palace with a satchel containing the royal jewels that he and his two accomplices, The Stabbington Brothers, have just stolen. However, we hear Flynn before we ever see him because he is also the opening and closing narrator of the story. Flynn Rider is voiced by Zachary Levi, a young man who also stars in the TV show, Chuck.

Flynn quickly deserts his partners, the Stabbington Brothers. Flynn is then pursued by the Royal Guard, most notably Maximus the horse. As Flynn tries to escape Maximus, he stumbles upon Rapunzel’s tower, which he climbs to get away from the determined horse. Rapunzel knocks the intruder out with the one “weapon” she has- a frying pan, knocking him unconscious.

When Flynn Rider comes to, he tries to woo himself out of the situation using his charm and good looks, neither of which works on Rapunzel. Finally, he agrees to take Rapunzel to see the lanterns. If he does this, Rapunzel agrees to give him back the bag with the jewels, which she hid while he was passed out.

Along the journey, Flynn Rider takes every opportunity to take advantage of Rapunzel’s obvious conviction over leaving the tower. He offers a supposed good natured compromise where they give up the endeavor and return to the tower. Rapunzel doesn’t fall for this. So, Flynn leads her to the Snuggly Duckling, a pub hang out for thugs, thinking this will surely make her want to go back home. However, Flynn is quickly captured, and it is the charming Rapunzel who befriends the thugs and gets Flynn Rider released.

The palace guards track Rapunzel and Flynn Rider to the pub, so they make a quick escape through an underground tunnel. The guards begin chasing them through the tunnel, and after encounters with the guards, Maximus, and Flynn’s two accomplices, Flynn Rider and Rapunzel find themselves in a cave that is quickly filling with water.

In the struggle to escape the rising waters, Flynn injures his hand. He also reveals his true name to Rapunzel- Eugene Fitzherbert. Rapunzel reveals her glowing hair to Eugene (which she takes to calling him) and uses the light to find a way out of the cave. Once outside, Rapunzel also reveals the healing powers of her hair and uses this to heal Flynn Rider’s hand wound.

Flynn is almost captured again by Maximus, but Rapunzel befriends the horse and makes a deal with him. She convinces the horse to allow Flynn Rider to continue to guide her to the lantern festival, after which they can continue to chase and allude each other. The trio reaches the kingdom, where Flynn purchases a flag and treats for Rapunzel. He also dances with her.

That evening, Flynn Rider takes Rapunzel out on a boat to see the lanterns. He tells her this is where she will get the best view of the lights. An obvious romance is blossoming between the two. Rapunzel gives Flynn Rider back his satchel, but it no longer seems as important to him, as he releases a lantern with Rapunzel.

Flynn Rider catches a glimpse of the Stabbington Brothers on shore, and decides just to give them the royal jewels they stole earlier. However, the brothers reveal they know the secret of Rapunzel’s hair and vow to make money off of it. They knock Flynn Rider unconscious, tie him to a boat, and set it sailing straight for the kingdom, where they know he will be captured. Rapunzel thinks Flynn Rider has betrayed her, and returns to the tower with Mother Gothel.

Thanks to a ploy set up by Maximus, the thugs from the Snuggly Duckling Pub break Flynn Rider out of jail so that he can go rescue Rapunzel. Maximus delivers him to the tower. Upon entering the window of the tower, Mother Gothel stabs Flynn Rider. Rapunzel, who has been chained up, says she will go to a new hiding place with Mother Gothel is she first allows Rapunzel to heal Flynn Rider. Mother Gothel agrees. Flynn Rider, not wanting Rapunzel to be imprisoned forever, cuts off all of her hair with a glass shard, causing the healing power in it to be lost. Rapunzel sits crying over the man she loved. One single tear falls onto his cheek, which contains the last drop of healing power within Rapunzel. Flynn Rider is healed.

He takes Rapunzel to the palace, where she is reunited with her parents. Flynn Rider later proposes, and goes on to rule alongside Rapunzel.
