BIRTHDAY BASH: Fat Quarter Shop Review & $50 Gift Certificate Giveaway!

Around the time that Raileigh turned 18 months old, we moved her to a big girl bed. Our pediatrician was concerned that she would be able to fall out of her crib easily due to her height. Plus, she had never been a big fan of the crib anyhow. We made the switch seamlessly, and on night one, it was evident that we had made the right decision.
Since then, I have been wanting to redo Raileigh's room. At first, we just used some old crib sheets and a blanket because I didn't have any actual bedding for her toddler bed. I began to search everywhere for the perfect bedding to convert Raileigh's room from a nursery into a big girl room. I found a duvet and cover along with 2 pillows and cases in the Ikea as-is room for $10. I didn't love the set, but for $10, I knew they would get us by. I kept searching everywhere, waiting for something to catch my eye.
And, nothing ever did. Finally, I decided that I would make Raileigh some new bedding for her room. Why I didn't think of this sooner, I'm not sure! Then, it was like starting my hunt all over again, only this time I was looking at fabric. I saw several things I liked, but had a horrible time trying to find enough fabrics that coordinated together. Pairing fabrics can be pretty difficult for me, and since it was for Raileigh's room, I wanted it to be just right!
That is when I came across the wonderful online source for fabric- Fat Quarter Shop. This delightful slice of the web was founded in 2003 by Kimberly Jolly, an avid quilter. She started it as a side business while she worked in corporate America. Now, she has turned Fat Quarter Shop into her full time job. Her husband, along with several other staff members, have joined her in this wonderful venture.
I was immediately impressed with the beautiful, high quality fabrics that were offered at Fat Quarter Shop. They sell fabrics from many designers that I know and love- Alexander Henry, Riley Blake, Robert Kaufman, Michael Miller, and more! I was browsing through the selection of Riley Blake fabrics, when I saw a unique specialty package that is offered at Fat Quarter Shop- Fat Quarter Bundles. These unique sets package together groups of fat quarters that coordinate well together.

I wanted to jump up and down with excitement because this was just what I had been looking for- a set of fabrics that coordinated well together! I had decided to make a basic rectangle quilt for Raileigh's toddler bed, and an assortment of fat quarters would provide me with ample fabric to create the quilt top. So, I began looking through the amazing assortment of fat quarter bundles. I narrowed it down to a few that I liked the most, and then sought my husbands input. For the most part, I really trust his judgment of fabrics because we have pretty similar styles. He wound up choosing the bundle I had secretly been leaning towards as well- The Rainy Days and Mondays Fat Quarter Bundle by Melimba and Beccabury for Riley Blake Designs.
I was beyond thrilled when Fat Quarter Shop agreed to send me this amazing bundle and be a part of the Birthday Bash. Their shipping was incredibly fast, and within days the fabric set was waiting in the mailbox. Inside was a very neatly packaged fat quarter bundle. Everything had been cut and folded together perfectly. It was so pristine, that I found it hard to the fabrics apart to use them! Finally, I did, because I needed to wash the fabrics and get started on the quilt. I always wash cotton fabrics before I use them to prevent as much shrinkage as possible once the finished product is washed.
I have to admit- this was to be my very first quilt. I have sewn for a few years now, and am pretty confident in making little girls clothing. However, my confidence started to go right out the window as I sat looking at the beautiful fabrics before me. I was very nervous to cut them. I didn't want to mess anything up. I know all too well that sewing blunders can happen from time to time, and I did not want this to be one of them! Once I made that first cut, I was good to go. It really wasn't ll that different from cutting fabric for a new dress.
After each and every piece had been cut, I took time to lay the pieces out like I wanted them. This process took a bit, as I moved the rectangles around to achieve the look that I desired. Once I was happy with the layout, I stacked the pieces up in order so that I could begin the best part-sewing!
I first sewed the pieces together in strips. Each strip had 2 each of 3 different size rectangles, for a total of six pieces. After each strip had been pieced together, I ironed all of my seams open. This is not one of my favorite things to do, even when sewing clothing, but it makes such a difference in the finished product. Before sewing the strips together, I decided to lay them out one last time to make sure I had not switched any of the pieces around. I was glad that I did because two of the pieces had gotten switched. This may not sound like a big deal, but to me it really changed the appearance of the quilt. A quick seam rip later, I switched the rectangles and sewed them together the way I had first intended for them to be.
Then, I got to work sewing the 12 strips together. I pinned everything together to make sure the seams lined up properly. Before I knew it, I had a finished quilt top! It was really exciting to stand back and look at all of the beautiful fabrics pieced together. The colors really came together well, and was incredibly excited with the outcome.
Now, being that I am new to quilting, I did not know where to go from here. The internet is a wealth of information though, and I was quickly able to find instructions for making my quilt sandwich, as well as creating and attaching the binding. I already knew how I planned to do the quilting- many, many rows of straight lines. And, this is where I am right now. I planned to have the quilt completed by this date, but that did not happen. I could give you all of the 1,873,244 reasons it did not happen, but instead I will just share the top two. 1.) I am a slow, deliberate seamstress who has to make sure ever single stitch is precise. This results in a quality finished product, but it takes a while to get there. 2.)I got a job I did not even imagine I would have when I began the quilt.
So, daily I chug away at a little more quilting. I am hoping to finish the quilting this week and work on hand-stitching the binding while we are traveling next week. Life likes to throw curve balls out there, so we'll see how that unfolds!
The creation of this quilt has been such a fantastic experience for me. I have taken my sewing in a new direction, and I could not be happier. It has been a lot of fun to try something new, and now I want to tackle creating a harder, more difficult quilt top. I cannot wait for the challenge!
When I am ready to create my next quilt, I know exactly where I will turn for supplies- Fat Quarter Shop. It seems that every time I visit the shop, they have added new fat quarter bundles. Just check out the all new Dr. Seuss bundle that will begin shipping soon! Plus, Fat Quarter Shop has a lot of other great items as well!

However has any one pointed out to you ,that when making a quilt top you do not iron your seams "out" like you do in sewing . You iron them both to the same side, usually toward the darker fabric . Not trying to be picky just helpful
