I love big, roomy, full coverage bibs. Why? Because I hate scrubbing stained laundry! Our cute little baby bibs quit cutting it a long time ago. Raileigh is tall and they would only cover a very small fraction of her body. I've checked out many local stores for larger baby bibs and there just is not a good selection there. Plus, the one's that they do have are just downright not cute.
This brings me to my newest etsy discovery- Hip Violet. Be prepared for a huge dose of cuteness! Jesi makes the most adorable baby wear that will make you want to change your little one's outfit 12 times a day! Everything she makes is modern and adorable! But, before I tell you anymore about everything she creates, let's get to know Jesi a little better. I am excited to introduce the lady behind Hip Violet, Jesi Josten!
Name and Location: Jesi Josten, Denver, CO
What inspired you to open your etsy shop? I had started making my “signature” oversized bibs for my friends and family after they saw how well they covered up my own daughter. Soon they were requesting I make some for gifts and encouraged me to open a shop. I’m so glad I did!
Where did you get your etsy shop name from? My oldest daughter Violet (now 3) is not only a hip kid, but she also had hip dysplasia as a baby. She was in a body cast for 6 months of her life to correct it. When I was thinking of a shop name, it seemed like the perfect fit!
Apart from creating things, what do you like to do? Before I had kids I was a dedicated horseback rider. I have owned and shown Quarter Horses since I was 8 years old. I miss it! I’m just now getting back into riding a bit and taking some lessons. I also love to play with my girls (my youngest, Willa, is 9 months) and read.
Is there any craft you don’t know how to do but wish you did? I would love to learn to sew from a pattern! It’s sad that I don’t know how yet - my grandma, who taught Home Ec. for years, attempted to teach me many times but it never made much sense. Someday I would love to actually pay attention and learn how! I would also love to know the basics of knitting or crocheting someday. I love the fact that you could do those while sitting on the beach - no machine needed!
What is your greatest accomplishment is life this far? Professionally my most proud moment was when a Hip Violet bib was shown on the Ellen Degeneres Show! And top it off, it was pictured on Jessica Alba’s daughter Honor. I was totally floored and obviously ecstatic! I was literally jumping around my living room! Personally it would be my two girls. They are the most adorable, sweet and wonderful miniature human beings I could ask for. I am so lucky to have them!
What are 5 words that describe you? easy-going, fun, silly, outgoing, smart (except when it comes to math. And baking.)
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Hip Violet World Domination! No really, I just hope I’m still sewing and creating! I would love to see Hip Violet really take off. I’m not sure where or how, but I feel like I have a good idea and a good thing going - I can’t wait to see where it take me!
Where would you most like to travel to? My background is Dutch and I would LOVE to return to Amsterdam someday and spend a little more time exploring the country. Or I’ll take a trip somewhere tropical and warm any cold winter day - I’ve heard Belize is beautiful!
What is your favorite children’s book? Our Animal Friends at Maple Hill Farm. I have always loved animals and I often wonder if it was because of this book, or if it’s in my blood (I come from a long line of horse people!). My daughter now has a copy of this book and I still love to read it to her!
Anyone or anything else you’d like to tell us about? First, I feel very lucky that I finally found something that I’m very passionate about AND that is successful. My parents can attest to the fact that I’ve always been a mini-entreprenuer. From making magnets in elementary school to tie-dyed shirts in high school, I have always had some crazy idea to both create and sell. I am so excited that finally I have found something that seems to be working!
Secondly, I just really want to say how amazing it is to be a part of the handmade movement - not only are there some incredibly talented crafters out there, but when you buy handmade you are supporting an artist and keeping local economies moving. Most of us make our items in very small batches and many are one-of-a-kind. Sure, they might cost a bit more than what you can buy at your local big-box store, but you’ll have something so unique and crafted with love! Support your local crafters!
I was incredibly thrilled when Jesi agreed to let me try out one of her spectacular bibs. The absolute cuteness is what initially drew me to her work. However, after reading the dimensions of her bibs, (all measure around 11" wide x 13.5" long) I knew I had to contact Jesi. Cuteness and a generous size all rolled into one- PERFECT combination!
I was even more excited when Jesi let us design our bib. She has a great selection of drool-worthy fabrics, so picking our design was not easy! We ultimately went with purple hearts and the birdie applique. I love soft colors paired with brown, so the fabric was perfect. Since I normally go with owls, I decided to change it up (just a little!) and go with a birdie.
Jesi sent us our lovely new bib really quickly. Not only did she custom make it just for us, she made a matching shirt for Raileigh as well. She used the colors and fabric we chose for the bib and made the most adorable little shirt! I was thrilled with the surprise and couldn't wait for Raileigh to try both of them out.
We used the bib for the first time the very day it arrived. From the first time I put it on Raileigh, I absolutely loved it. I mean, I don't know that I have seen a cuter food catcher/ clothing protector than this! Plus, can you see just how much of Raileigh it covers? It even covers her shoulders, which many bibs ignore. Bib perfection!
I am equally as pleased with our surprise shirt. The fit is great, the tee is soft, and the design is adorable! It's one of those shirts all the other mom's at the playground will stare at and and wish they had for their child. Raileigh loves the little birdie on it and will point and say "tweet tweet" when she wears it.
I have washed the bib only about a zillion times since it arrived. I try to make sure it's in every load of laundry I do. I love it so much, I use it as often as possible. Plus, since the bib snaps closed, I don't have to worry about it getting stuck to any of my other clothes. Jesi's bib has held up amazingly well through our repeated use. I know it is the one bib we will continue to use until our bib wearing days are over.
Now, I can't end this without bragging on Jesi a little. She mentioned earlier in her interview that her bib was on the Ellen Show. I was excited that she agreed to work with a little mommy blogger after receiving publicity like that! What an honor for your work to be seen on such a famous actress' daughter.
