WEN Hair Care Review

When I became a mother, long showers went straight out the door. I can sneak in that occasional one when my husband is home. However, I am usually lightning fast because it’s just me and my daughter at home in the mornings. If there is anything I can do to simplify shower time, then I am all for it. So, when I heard of the revolutionary hair care system called WEN, I was very interested in trying it out.

I have curly hair. During my teenage years, my hair got even curlier. Then, when I was pregnant with my daughter, everyone told me that it would probably turn straighter by the time she was born. Well, they were all wrong and my curly hair stuck around. I have to cleanse and condition my hair daily. I use mousse to help tame my hair and keep it in place, so it’s important to me to remove the styling products daily. Plus, my hair can tend to be quite dry, so a conditioner is needed as well. A large amount of my shower time is spent focusing in my hair. Since I use a separate shampoo and conditioner, it takes twice as long to get my hair clean and nourished.

What appealed to me about the WEN hair care system is that it combines these two steps. You can condition and cleanse your hair simultaneously! Now, I have tried those 2-in-1 products before, but I have never been very impressed. Mostly, I just feel like they clean my hair okay, and don’t really do anything at all to condition it. So, though I was interested in seeing what WEN was all about, I was also a bit skeptical as to what the outcome would be.

While I waited for my sample of WEN to arrive, I decided to read more about the product and see exactly how it works. WEN is designed to thoroughly cleanse your hair without lathering and without any of the harsh chemicals that are found in other shampoos. Ordinary shampoos tend to strip your hair of naturally occurring nutrients and oils. When mixed with water, this product actually creates a foam. The smooth foam is designed to make your hair have more sheen, luster, moisture, and strength.

The WEN system was designed by Los Angeles stylist Chaz Dean. Chaz has not used any shampoos on him or his clients in over 14 years! He tested the WEN system first on himself, then his stylists, then current clients. The system took a full five years for Chaz to create and perfect. It first became available on the market in November 2001. Chaz chose the name WEN for several reasons. First, it sound very similar to “zen”. Secondly, the idea of WEN is really looking at hair care in a completey new and opposite way than you’re used to. WEN is actually NEW spelled backwards!

It did not take long for my WEN products to arrive. I was sent the entire WEN Hair Care system. Here is what all that includes:

1 – 12 oz. WEN Cleansing Conditioner
1 – 2 oz. WEN Styling Crème
1 – 2 oz. WEN Re Moist Intensive Hair Repair Mask
1 – 10g WEN Texture Balm
1 – WEN Wide Tooth Shower Comb

The product I was most interested in trying was the cleansing conditioner. I really liked the idea of being able to replace two giant bottles with one! I followed Chaz’s tips on the best way to use the cleansing conditioner. I have fine to medium textured hair, and Chaz recommends 8 pumps to the crown section, 8 pumps to the nape section and 8 pumps on the right and left ends of the hair. After really working to massage the product into my hair, I let it sit for 3-5 minutes. He says it should be the first thing on and the last thing off in our shower routine. So, while the WEN was working on my hair, I used that time to clean the rest of my body. It’s really a quite simple routine to follow! I did notice after the first use that it didn’t seem like I had actually removed all of the product from my hair. So, I made sure to pay more attention to this step the following time I used it!

I have been using the WEN cleansing conditioner for several weeks. I have seen a difference in the softness of my hair. Plus, it just smells wonderful. The scent I received is sweet almond mint. Now, I am normally not a huge mint fan, but this smells wonderful! It is also nice that it takes less time to care for my hair. Plus, I have a small stand up shower, so the fewer the bottles in there, the better! The cleansing conditioner can also be used as a leave-in conditioner. I have not used it in this capacity, but I am certain it would do wonderful.

I have also tried out the styling cream that came with the WEN Hair Care set. I do occasionally straighten my hair and thought that would be a wonderful time to test out the styling cream. I applied the product to wet hair after I got out of the shower. Then, I used a blow dryer and flat iron to straighten my hair. In comparison to other straightening products I have used, I honestly prefer this one. I think it was a combination of the cleansing conditioner I had been using along with the styling cream that made my hair look amazing. I usually have a few flyaways when I go with straight hair, but I think there was a drastic reduction in the amount I had this time.

I have been quite pleased with my experience with the WEN hair care system. I plan to continue use of this revolutionary product. If you are interested in trying it out for yourself, you can order the complete kit like I received for only $29.95. This includes all of the products I listed above, as well as a tips and information sheet from Chaz. Busy moms- just think of all the time you can save by combining the shampoo and conditioner into one easy step! Plus, these products will leave you feeling great about your hair!

Thank you to Cristina at Guthy-Renker for sending me the WEN Hair Care System by Chaz Dean to review. The opinions and experiences posted above are my own and your may differ.

I would advise caution when working with or buying from this company. The products themselves sound GREAT, and I have been really excited to try them, but I actually won a WEN prize package back in January and they won’t deliver it! The blog owner who hosted the giveaway has told them it never arrived to me, and I have emailed them numerous times. They won’t respond to me directly, and they’ve told her that they are completely out of stock–of everything, apparently–and so can’t send me any. Yeah…that sounds likely. I’ve also read loads of complaints about their auto-shipment program. Sorry to be a downer, but if you are considering buying from them or working with them on a giveaway, please proceed with caution! They simply won’t honor their commitments.
