Review & Giveaway: The Scientific Seamstress- CLOSED

8:10 PM Posted by Desi @ Wee Share

I have been incredibly busy working on Raileigh's spring wardrobe. It's still a bit cold here, but if I don't get a lot done now, it will be warm before I know it! When I started searching for patterns, I really wanted to find unique designs that would offer me many options for customization. Of course, I turned to etsy to start my search. It wasn't long before I cam across The Scientific Seamstress.

Carla is the wonderful lady behind this fabulous etsy shop. The Scientific Seamstress is filled with many incredible patterns for both you and your little one. Before we talk about all of Carla's amazing creations, let's get to know her a bit better. I am pleased to introduce Carla, The Scientific Seamstress!

Name and Location: Carla Crim, Towson, MD

Where did you get your etsy shop name, The Scientific Seamstress, from? My background is in molecular biology. I left the world of research to stay home with my baby son in 2004. To make a little extra money, I sewed doll clothes and sold them on eBay. I had many requests for my patterns, so I put together a few compilations of dolly designs, complete with step-by-step sewing instructions. My line of downloadable patterns has expanded to include designs for children and adults. I approach patterns as if they were research projects, and spend lots of time optimizing and testing the designs to make for the best possible sewing experience.

What inspired you to open your etsy shop? I just love the community atmosphere of etsy. There are so many talented crafters supporting one another there. Many of my customers sell customized creations in their own etsy shops, using my patterns as a basis. It thrills me to no end to watch their businesses grow!

Apart from creating things, what do you like to do? I like to garden, do yoga, and spend time with my family.

Is there any craft you don’t know how to do but wish you did? Gosh, I wish I could knit! I've tried to teach myself, but I don't think I have the necessary focus. Someday I might take a class, but for now, sewing is keeping me pretty busy.

If you could meet anyone from the past or present, who would you choose and why? I'd love to meet Martha Stewart! She'd probably intimidate the heck out of me at first, but after a few sips of a delightful merlot, we'd have lots to talk about! She is such a Jill-of-all-trades!

What is your favorite children's book? I really enjoy reading Dr. Seuss books to my son - the words are just FUN! I think our current favorite is Hop on Pop.

What is your greatest accomplishment is life this far? Finding happiness at home :)

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Hopefully still making patterns and sewing my heart out!

Anyone or anything else you’d like to tell us about? I have the most wonderful team of testers! Not only do they make sure my patterns are accurate, understandable, and fun to sew, they also give me loads of encouragement and inspiration.

I could have literally spent hours looking at all the beautiful patterns in Carla's shop! However, I was really drawn to one pattern in particular- The Sophie Tunic. Along with the pattern listing, there are several photographs of tunics that were made using the pattern. Every last one of them is beautiful! It didn't take long for me to decide that I had to see if Carla was interested in having the pattern featured on Wee Share.

I was absolutely thrilled when Carla agreed to let me review the pattern. She quickly sent the PDF over to my email, along with several other patterns for me to try (keep you eyes peeled for reviews of those patterns in the coming weeks!). As with all patterns I use, I set out reading the pattern before actually doing any sewing or cutting. This is highly important, especially with this pattern. There are clear instructions to make sure that when you print, the scale is set to none. If you don't do this, your pattern will print out smaller than it should, and that is never good (trust me!).

Once I had finished reading the pattern, I could already tell that I loved it. The pattern contains sizes 6-12 months all the way up to 11/12 years. So, with one initial purchase, you will have a pattern that will last you for a very long time. Additionally, each size has 4 length options and 4 sleeve options- cap sleeve, short sleeve, cuffed, and long sleeve. The long sleeve and cuff sleeve also have 4 length options. There are also options to add a button closure or ribbon tie to the top. Plus, there are directions to place the yoke inside the shirt or have a contrasting yoke on the outside. Basically, you could make a plethora of shirts and never use the same combination of features twice. I think that is pretty amazing!

One of my favorite things within the pattern are leg and arm diagrams that Carla has created. She lists the average height associated with each tunic size. Based on that height, Carla shows where each of the four lengths would hit the leg. She also shows you where all of the sleeve options, including all 4 lengths of the cuff and long sleeve, fall on the arm. I found this to be very useful because I always feel like I am guessing as to how a garment will fit Raileigh. This virtually eliminates guess work when deciding which size is best for your child. As a side note, I did feel that the pattern ran very true to size.

It was time to get to work on my first tunic. I choose two brown and blue fabrics I had in my stash. I had been wanting to make something from them for some time, and the tunic seemed perfect. I used the handy chart included with the pattern to know which pages I needed to print for the size tunic that I wanted to create. I used the pattern pieces to cut out all of the fabric I would be needing. I had chosen to do a cuffed sleeve at the shortest length, the tunic at the shortest length, and a contrasting yoke.

Every step in the pattern has a picture to go along with it. Both the pictures and directions are very clear and easy to follow. Seam allowances are clearly noted. It is also very easy to know which directions to follow for the options that you have chosen. For example, when it is time to create the yoke, the pattern lets you know which page to go to for an inner yoke, and which page to go to if your yoke will be exposed on the outside. I could not imagine a more well-written, easy to follow pattern.

Once I completed my first tunic, I went to try it on Raileigh. It was a bit tight to get over her head. It was also shorter than I had thought it would be. I just figured that the pattern ran small, so I decided to make another one in the 3/4 size. I started printing out the larger pattern size, and thought "Wow! This is a lot bigger than the one I just made!". So, I printed a test page of the 18 months/ 2T size I had used to compare to the pattern pieces I made my first tunic from. Indeed, the first pattern pieces were smaller. I had read the directions to set the scale to none, but clearly had not done so. So, I printed out the 18 months/ 2T pattern correctly, and got to work on a second tunic.

I used some fabric from the Alexander Henry "Juicy" collection and a matching stripe. This time, I chose to make the tunic the longest length to accommodate for Raileigh's long torso. I decided to use a cuffed sleeve again, but this time went an inch longer. I also went with a contrasting yoke. As I was sewing, I could already tell that this tunic was going to fit Raileigh a lot better. Plus, since I had already made one tunic, I felt a lot more confident making this one.

Once I was finsihed, I was very pleased with the size and structure of the garment. Indeed, if you print the pattern correctly, the pattern runs very true to size! This tunic did take me a while to make, but it is a quality and intricate pattern that is well worth every minute I spent on it. I foresee many more Sophie Tunics in Raileigh's future!

I seriously could not be more pleased with my pattern from The Scientific Seamstress. It doesn't hurt that Carla is incredibly helpful and is just an email away if you have any questions while using her patterns. In addition to the Sophie Tunic, Carla offers many other fabulous patterns. There are assorted garments for your child, as well as several for you. Carla even offers some of her patterns in doll size, so you can make matching outfit for your daughter and her doll. I think that sounds like so much fun.

I highly encourage you to head over to The Scientific Seamstress and look at all that she has to offer. You will not be disappointed with the pattern quality or service that you receive. Just don't forget to come back here after browsing Carla's shop. That is because she is doing a very generous giveaway right here at Wee Share! One lucky reader will be able to choose THREE patterns from The Scientific Seamstress. How exciting! Thank you, Carla!
