Review & Giveaway: Posh Petunia- CLOSED

The weather warmed up for a few days and gave me the false impression it was here to stay! It put me in the mood to do some more spring sewing for Raileigh. All the long sleeve shirts she has are not going to cut it once spring finally does arrive. Approximately a month ago, I started looking for patterns to create new spring tops for Raileigh. I wanted to find some cute and stylish things to make for her, but it was also important that they be comfortable to wear. So, I was incredibly excited when I found the Daphne pattern at Posh Petunia.

Barbie is the wonderful lady behind this exciting etsy shop. She offers patterns to create beautiful clothing for little girls. Plus, she has a lot of cute and fun clothing that is already made and ready to ship directly to you. But, before I tell you more about Barbie’s shop, let’s get to know her a bit better. I am pleased to introduce Barbie of Posh Petunia!

Name and Location: Barbie, Southeast Iowa

Where did you get your etsy shop name from? I named it after my little girl, who is sometimes called “Petunia” when being naughty!

What inspired you to open your etsy shop? I discovered a love of creating girly clothing when we had our daughter. I love all things girly, frilly and over the top, but not so much the over the top price tags in boutiques! So, while I love to shop in boutiques, my husband does not like the bill that comes along with it. I often see something and think, “I bet I can make that and make it even cuter!” And I do.

Apart from creating things, what do you like to do? I also love to bake! Cookies, cupcakes, cakes, the list goes on! Good thing I have a little chef who loves to help her mommy, in matching aprons of course.

Is there any craft you don’t know how to do but wish you did? I can’t think of one. I give most things a try at least once!

What is your greatest accomplishment is life this far? My wonderful family and especially our daughter. Pretty proud of myself for starting a business too and designing some of my own patterns!

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Not sure. My degree is in education, so I suppose I will be back in that field eventually. Pretty sure I’ll still be creating something though!

Where would you most like to travel to? Anywhere warm right now! Iowa winters are pretty cold and dreary!

If you could meet anyone, past or present, who would you choose? I would love to have Amy Butler, Anna Maria Horner, and Joel Dewberry over for dinner!

What is your favorite dessert? Just one?!?! I love them all!
Cheesecake, Red Velvet Cake, warm chocolate chip cookies….

Once I had found the beautiful Daphne pattern, I started envisioning all of the wonderful tops I could make from it! After I finished daydreaming, I decided to email Barbie and see if she was interested in having the pattern featured on Wee Share. I was thrilled when she was responded with an enthusiastic “Yes!”. It was a very short time before the pattern was awaiting me in my email. I could not wait to get started!

The first thing I did was read through the entire pattern. This helps you to understand the process a whole lot better once you actually start sewing. I think it also helps to cut down on mistakes. After reading the pattern, I decided that it was time for some fabric shopping. I wanted the fabrics I used for the Daphne to be bold and fun in beautiful spring colors. I chose two different fabrics for my top from a line that is exclusive to my favorite fabric store, JoAnn Fabric and Crafts.

Next, I had to pre-wash my fabrics. This is one of my least favorite steps. When I get home with new fabric, I am ready to use it, not wait for it to wash and dry! However, I think it’s very important to wash and dry fabric before using it, especially when you’re making toddler clothing. Then, it was time to cut my pattern pieces. The Daphne is actually a series of several different sized rectangles. Barbie provides the measurements for each of the rectangles. I used freezer paper to create my pattern pieces and made sure to label which size that went with. Using my pattern pieces, I cut all of the fabric I would need to create the top.

Next, it was time to start sewing! I found Barbie’s directions very easy to follow. She writes all of her patterns with the beginning seamstress in mind. The language she uses is easy to understand. Plus, she included photos of the steps involved in the sewing process. Barbie also included her email address if you do get stuck and need any assistance.

After every seam, I always like to iron what I have just sewn. I think this gives a more professional and polished look to the finished garment. I really enjoyed the entire process of creating the Daphne. It involves two of my favorite sewing techniques- gathering and shirring. One of my favorite things about the Daphne is how much the fabric gathers in the front. It makes the shirt look very full. I was excited to finally reach the final step of the pattern when I got to shirr the back of the shirt. Shirring makes the fabric scrunch up and stretch, which makes the top easy to fit over Raileigh’s head. It also provides a comfortable fit when she is wearing it. I really like the way that the shirring looks on the finished shirt.

I could not wait to see how the completed Daphne looked on Raileigh. It is fabulous! I tried it on with no undershirt. However, this could become a winter top by simply adding a shirt underneath. So, what I thought of as a beautiful spring shirt pattern is actually a versatile year round shirt. Plus, now that I have created one Daphne, I have so many ideas whirling in my head for more! I would love to lengthen the top and create a dress using the pattern. You can also add an apron to the top or a ruffle to the bottom hem for an entirely different look. There are so many possibilities when using this pattern! Since the pattern goes all the way up to size 6, I have several years to try out all of the different variations.

In addition to the beautiful Daphne pattern that I tried out, Barbie has created several other sewing patterns as well. I really want to try out the triple ruffle knot dress! It is such a full and beautiful design. I just know that Raileigh would look wonderful in one! Plus, Barbie has a lot of already made garments listed at Posh Petunia. Some are variations of the patterns she has for sale, and some are different designs all together. She has an incredible eye for fabric pairings, and I think you will be impressed by some of the colors and designs she puts together!
