I love buying Raileigh plain, solid color t-shirts. Why? Well, after that I get to take them home and find fun ways to dress them up. One of my favorite ways to embellish t-shirts is with appliques. A great source for fabric appliques is Rain Frog Boutique.

Vicki is the founder of Rain Frog Boutique. She is mom to a wonderful two year old son. I just love the story of how she came up with the name for her etsy shop! To find out this and a whole lot more about Vicki, you’ll have to read the following interview with the founder of Rain Frog Boutique!

Name and Location: Vicki McGauley- Jasper, FL

Where did you get your etsy shop name, Rain Frog Boutique, from? This may sound a little crazy to some, but when our baby started eating baby food, we would feed him out of the little baby food feeder and when he got down to the last little bit of food, he would make sounds like a little rain frog trying to get out the last bit…so that is how I decided on Rain Frog Boutique!

What inspired you to open your etsy shop? The birth of my son. I wanted to be able to dress him in cute little onesies that you just cannot find in stores. With the appliques I can create a onesie for every holiday!

Apart from creating things, what do you like to do? Spending time with my family, reading, and cooking.

Is there any craft you don’t know how to do but wish you did? I would love to learn how to do tatting. I had a Great Aunt that knew how to do this and I regret not asking her to teach me.

If you could meet anyone from the past or present, who would you choose and why? I would choose my Grandmother (Dad’s Mom). She passed away years before I was born, but my parents say I am very much like her. Hearing my parents tell me things she did and little sayings that she said just makes me want to know her.

What is your greatest accomplishment is life this far? My little boy. We waited 12 years for him so I would say that is a great accomplishment!

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Happy and successful

Anyone or anything else you’d like to tell us about? I would like to say that I have the most supportive husband. He stands behind me through everything and that makes a big difference. I would also like to say that I plan on adding more appliques to my shop. Also, for those of you who don’t have time to create, I will be offering appliqued onesies.

Vicki, being the kind lady that she is, sent Raileigh and I an applique to embellish one of her shirts. I chose the elephant. Vicki offers all her appliques on no sew ultra heat bond or sewable bond. I chose to have our applique backed with sewable bond.

Once the applique arrived, the first thing I did was peel away the backing on the elephant and lightly iron it onto the shirt. This is so that the applique will stay in place while I stitch it to the shirt. I used my sewing machine to stitch around the elephant, staying close to the edge of the applique. You don’t have to machine stitch the applique. You could choose to sew it by hand for a different look.

After sewing the elephant to the shirt, I ironed on his ear. I then took the shirt back to the sewing machine to stitch around the edge of the ear. The reason I love to sew on appliques is that as you wash them, the edges become frayed. It will only fray up to the line that you have stitched. The more you wash the shirt, the more frayed the edges become.

So, as soon as I had finished sewing the applique on, I threw it in the washer and dryer. To my liking, it has started the fraying process. It’s kind of funny that I’m actually looking forward to washing this shirt because I never look forward to anything that involves laundry.

If you don’t think the elephant design is for you, that’s okay. Vicki offers a variety of other designs in her shop. She has an adorable argyle tie that would look perfect on a little boy’s onesie or shirt. There is also a Girly Shoe design for all the little princesses in your life. Vicki has a Florida Gator applique for sale as well. We won’t hold that against her even though we’re Georgia fans 🙂 If you see a design you like, but don’t like the fabric it’s made in, that’s okay, too. Just let Vicki know. All appliques can be created in a different fabric.

The great thing about appliques is that they aren’t just limited to being used on shirts. You can get a blank canvas tote at the craft store and use an applique to make an adorable new bag. You could also add an applique to the leg of some blue jeans to give them some extra flair. Additionally, if you have a t-shirt that as gotten a stain on it, an applique is a great way to cover that up!

So, after reading about all the fun ways you can use appliques, I am sure that you’d love to try one out for yourself. You are in luck! Vicki has generously offered to give one lucky reader any applique from Rain Frog Boutique! Thank you, Vicki!
